The P88 is a family of hybrid readers,
supporting co-existence of smart card and magnetic card processing. In addition to the smart card capabilities of the P68/P69, this unit also reads magnetic data; single, dual or triple track information in accordance to ISO7811 standard. A dual-color LED indicator presents device status and card reading results. The device locks the card in place when accessing the smart card but leave it free when reading the magnetic stripe. This variation is handled under program control, with no need for end user involvement. To provide increased magnetic performance, the magnetic stripe is read on both insertions and removal. Landed IC contacts are used to minimize wear of either the reader or card contacts. The P88 series has a flexible design and can freely stand on the desktop, or can be attached with Velcro or screws. The P68/P69 and P88 prvide serial interface. Simple, easy to use API's are provided in device drivers for the DOS, Windows 95, Windows NT and OS/2 environments. Power is either via the keyboard port or with an external 9V DC adapter.
